Poetry+Motion: Freedom!

What is Poetry+Motion?

It’s the presentation of poetry, written by local poets and translated into movement by local dancers. The first Poetry+Motion was produced by Lola Peters and Suzanne Simmons (Danceable Planet) in October 2010. The second, themed “A Celebration of All Those We Love,” was produced in partnership with The Hansberry Project at ACT Theater and held in the Bullitt Cabaret on February 13, 2011. The theme for the June 12, 2011 Poetry+Motion is Freedom! You are invited to interpret it any way you want. Please see Submission Guidelines, below, for details.

Process Overview

After the poetry submission deadline, dancers selected to participate will receive a PDF file containing all the submitted poems, but without the name of the poet. They will select up to four poems that inspire them and create a dance to go with that poem. Poets will then record the poem (so the dancer will understand the poet’s cadence and emphasis during choreography). The poets and dancers will rehearse together and then present their poem and dance to the audience at the performance on June 12, 2011.

Submission Process:

  1. Please submit your work by sending 1-4 poems in MSWord or Macintosh Pages format (no PDFs please)to Lola Peters at uualpeters@aol.com before 5pm on Sunday, April 3, 2011
  2. All poems will be compiled and sent to the dancers without the poet’s name attached and with a statement that poems are not to be copied or otherwise shared.
  3. Dancers will select the final poems by April 17, 2011 and Lola Peters will notify poets which/whose poems have been selected by April 21, 2011.
  4. Lola Peters will record poets reading their selected poems during the week of May 2‑9, 2011. This recording will be placed on a secure website where it can be viewed by the dancer but cannot be downloaded or copied. The dancer will use the recording as a guideline for creating the dance.
  5. The rehearsal schedule is listed above. Please do not submit poetry if you will not be available for rehearsals or recording.

We will provide a small honorarium to each selected poet and dancer. Honorarium will be based on the number of your poems that are selected for dance.

Please feel free to share these guidelines with other poets. If you know dancers who may be interested in participating, please have them contact Suzanne Simmons at suzanne@myworld-df.com. She can advise them of the audition schedule.

We're so excited to do this wonderful project again!
