Poetry+Motion: Freedom!
What is Poetry+Motion?
It’s
the presentation of poetry, written by local poets and translated into movement
by local dancers. The first Poetry+Motion
was produced by Lola Peters and Suzanne Simmons (Danceable Planet) in October
2010. The second, themed “A Celebration of All Those We Love,” was produced in
partnership with The Hansberry Project at ACT Theater and held in the Bullitt
Cabaret on February 13, 2011. The theme for the June 12, 2011 Poetry+Motion is Freedom! You are invited to
interpret it any way you want. Please see Submission Guidelines, below, for
details.
Process Overview
After
the poetry submission deadline, dancers selected to participate will receive a
PDF file containing all the submitted poems, but without the name of the poet.
They will select up to four poems that inspire them and create a dance to go
with that poem. Poets will then record the poem (so the dancer will understand
the poet’s cadence and emphasis during choreography). The poets and dancers
will rehearse together and then present their poem and dance to the audience at
the performance on June 12, 2011.
